The Boston Beanpot
Ever since the first Beanpot Tournament was organized in 1952, Bostonians have looked forward to watching Boston College, Boston University, Harvard and Northeastern battle for hockey supremacy in the Beanpot hockey tournament. In a town as rich in hockey tradition as Boston is, Beanpot tickets are always going to be hot. The 1978 blizzard dumping 27 inches of snow was not enough to keep fans from watching that year’s Beanpot Hockey Tournament, and you can bet that they will be there this year. Scoring Beanpot tickets is almost as tough a getting Green Monster tickets for a Red Sox Yankees Game.
The Beanpot Tournament has been around since 1952. Ever since it was established Beanpot tickets have been in high demand. It pits Boston’s four college hockey powers against each other to settle who has the best hockey program in town. The annual college hockey tournament features the best hockey programs in the city. The schools that participate in the Beanpot are BU Hockey, Harvard hockey, BC hockey and Northeastern Hockey. The tournament is played as a double-header on the first Monday of February, with the two winners playing a week later to decide who is the best in Boston. In recent history Boston University has been dominant in the Beanpot Tournament, winning in 12 of the past 15 years. In fact, BU has been so dominant in the Beanpot that some students have taken to calling the Tournament the BU Invitational.
Atlanta Thrashers center Marty Reasoner, who played on the BC Hockey team from 1995 0 98 remembers the Beanpot Tournament fondly. “It’s the best scene in college hockey. The national championship can be in Michigan or Minnesota and people in Boston may not hear about it, but in the Beanpot you are on center stage,” Reasoner told SI.
One of the most memorable Beanpot Tournaments took place during the infamous Blizzard of 1978. More than 27 inches of snow dumped by the storm was not enough to keep fans from buying Beanpot tickets and seeing the action. Local records show that more than 3,500 fans remained to watch BC play undefeated BU. BU beat BC 12-5, however more than 200 Beanpot ticket holders were stranded in the Boston Garden for several days. The first Monday in February is the date the Beanpot Tournament starts. Be there for all excitement and atmosphere that comes with Beanpot Tournament tickets.
